Dangerous driving habits revealed in poll
Over half of the motorists who responded to a recent survey have admitted that they indulge in driving habits which are not responsible. The poll, conducted by Co-operative Insurance, found that 53 per cent of us thought it was alright to eat or have a drink whilst driving.
Co-operative Insurance spokesman, Grant Mitchell, said that although it may seem harmless to be drinking a soft drink or nibbling on a sandwich while driving, the consequences of not having complete concentration on the road can be devastating.
The survey of 3,000 people also found that 12 per cent of drivers smoked while behind the wheel. Nearly half of those polled admitted that they would speed in certain situations with 43 per cent saying they were likely to drive too fast when they were in a bad mood, and 46 per cent saying they would speed if they were late for an appointment or late for work.
The survey also found that seven per cent of drivers still used their mobile phones whilst driving, even though the practice is illegal, and six percent of us finish getting dressed or putting on make-up whilst sitting in the driver’s seat.
Speeding offences were most likely to be committed by motorists who were in a bad mood, needed the lavatory or who were tired, according to the survey. Drivers were also more likely to drive over the speed limit while travelling on a motorway. Mitchell said that the results of the survey proved that to many drivers were increasing their chances of having a serious accident.
