Avis keen to see benefits of Durban relocation
Avis South Africa boss, Wayne Duvenage, has said that he is sure that by the end of the decade the company’s expensive relocation to King Shaka International Airport will pay off. Although he admits that the company would have preferred to remain at the old airport, now that all the work had been completed, he was sure that benefits would start to present themselves.
Duvenage also said that it was a wise decision to grow the company’s fleet ahead of this year’s World Cup instead of waiting until just before the summer holidays as they would usually do. He explained that Avis had experienced heavy demand for vehicles during the competition, especially from those visiting from the US and Europe.
Overall, demand from tourists for car hire during the games grew by 22 per cent, and although demand from the corporate market almost dried up completely during the World Cup, there are signs that the business traveller is returning, according to Duvenage.
The Avis chief executive also said that he believed more could be done by the authorities in Durban to encourage tourism. He pointed out that the KwaZulu-Natal coast offered a wealth of beach holiday opportunities and that the all-year-round good weather was another major selling point.
Duvenage was also keen to point out that, since the end of last year, Avis has been carbon neutral. He added that as well as investing in foreign carbon offsetting projects, the amount of municipal water consumption by the company had been reduced by 80 per cent.
