A memorial is to be unveiled later today in commemoration of the country’s worst ever rail disaster. A plaque has been put up near Gretna Green on the Quintinshill Bridge in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland to remember the 227 people who lost their lives when three trains collided nearby on 22 May 1915.
The tragedy happened when a train carrying soldiers of the Royal Scots, on their way to fight in the First World War, slammed into a stationary goods train. A train heading north from London then collided with the wreckage. Of those who died in the accident, 215 were [...]

Motorists want to stick to speed limits but in reality struggle to do so, according to a new survey. In a study carried out by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), nearly 90 percent of the 3,000 people interviewed in August and September said they always aimed to comply with speed limits, but 60 percent said they found it difficult to do so.

Hertz, one of the largest car rental companies in the United Arab Emirates, has scrapped an unlimited mileage scheme in the area after a surge of customers started using its vehicles to travel between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The firm has implemented a 4,000kms cap on mileage per month from the start of September.
The limit applies only to customers who rent cars by the month and has since been increased to 5,000kms since it was first introduced. Hertz claims the larger allowance means that 98 percent of their customers will not face additional charges due to the scheme.
Hertz UAE spent [...]

VisitScotland, the publicly-funded Scottish tourism body, has confirmed that former chief executive, Philip Riddle, has been given a payoff worth £240,000. Riddle left his post earlier this year and was replaced by Malcolm Roughead, the organisations head of marketing. Riddle will receive £113,000 into his pension with a £127,000 gross settlement.
MSP for Scottish Labour, George Foulkes, said the deal was astonishing at a time of such economic uncertainty. He added that it raised questions over how the organisation was being run. Iain Smith of the Lib Dems described the settlement as an extraordinary sum of money.

The merger between British Airways and Spanish carrier Iberia is looking ever more likely following a board meeting held in Madrid on Wednesday. One of the largest remaining hurdles to an eventual tie-up had been BA’s massive pension deficit. In June, BA came to an agreement with pension trustees on how to deal with the £3.7 billion black hole.
Iberia has endorsed the plans which involve the New Airways Pension Scheme, with a gap of £1.7 billion, being closed in 2026. The Airways Pension Scheme, with a gap of £1 billion will balance its books in 2023. Cash contributions to both [...]
