US air safety officials open debate over safety of children travelling on adults’ laps.

The National Transportation Safety Board in the US has opened up the debate over whether it is safe to allow small children to travel on their parent’s laps when travelling on-board an aircraft. The NTSB’s argument that it is not safe to allow any child, of any age, to travel on someone’s lap follows an investigation into the crash of a small plane in Montana last year.

China suspends pilots with falsified qualifications

Officials in China have suspended a number of airline pilots after discovering that more than 200 have not been honest about their qualifications or the amount of flight experience they have. The investigation into pilot records began after a Henan Airlines jet crashed in Yichun last month killing 42 passengers.
The Chinese Civil Aviation Authority plans to make it compulsory for all technical crew and flight staff to sit a new set of examinations. Of all the pilots found to possess fraudulent records, more than half are currently employed by Shenzhen Airlines, owners of Henan Airlines.

New car sales down

The ongoing effects of the economic downturn have once again impacted on sales of new cars.
New vehicle sales declined in August, with further falls predicted for the remainder of the year as Britain steels itself for an increase in VAT and watches its spending following the austerity budget.
Last month saw a total registration of 55,305 new cars, a 17.5 per cent decrease on comparative figures from the same period a year earlier, which was fuelled by significant car scrappages, says the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Drivers across Britain can soon be behind the wheel of a new generation in motoring technology.
Motorists in the UK will be able to order the Nissan Leaf, the highly-praised electric vehicle which also comes with a cash back deal from the government.
