A jury in California has ruled in favour of a family whose daughters died in a car crash involving a recalled vehicle.
The parents of Raechel and Jacqueline Houck, from Santa Cruz, were awarded $15 million after filing a lawsuit against the San Francisco office of Enterprise Rent-A-Car claiming wrongful death. A recent report by Passenger Focus, the nation’s rail watchdog, shows that train passengers are becoming more satisfied by their train travel experience. A survey of 31,000 train users revealed that 83 per cent of travellers were happy with their treatment by Britain’s train companies, an increase of two per cent from the spring of last year.

An inquest into the Potters Bar train crash, which resulted in the deaths of seven people on May 10 2002, has heard how a company boss tried repeatedly to warn staff that he thought something was wrong on the eve of the accident. Peter Prime said that he felt the train lurch near to where the crash happened the following day, and described the movement as being very unusual and worrying.

A hotel being managed by Hilton has been temporarily shut down by Chinese police who are investigating possible links between hotel staff and a prostitution ring. The hotel is located in the Chongqing municipality in southwest China. China National Radio said that Qinglong Property Development Co, the owner of the hotel, is also being investigated by the authorities because of suspected links to the Chinese underworld and involvement in running a prostitution racket.

A new study has shown that a significant proportion of UK drivers would not admit to hitting a parked car.
Around 20 per cent of the nation’s drivers said quite freely that they would flee the scene if they happened to damage a parked vehicle. The online survey was undertaken by the UK insurer Elephant.
The poll canvassed 3,000 drivers as to what they would do in the event of causing a minor ding, with a further 20 per cent saying that the make and model of the car would dictate whether they would be honest enough to leave their name and [...]

A report by online travel experts, Expedia, suggests that British holidaymakers like to book their trips well in advance and commonly opt for package deals. Those booking a holiday also tend to do so on a Monday evening, with only one in ten waiting for the weekend to come round to book a holiday on a Saturday. The report showed that Sunday was the quietest day of the week for the Expedia website.
