Airlines unlikely to receive ash cloud bailouts

The government has admitted that there is very little chance of airlines disrupted by the ash cloud which closed much of the airspace over Europe for nearly a week earlier in the year, receiving compensation. The Department for Transport stated that although the UK government has not completely ruled out giving support to operators and airlines, it would be wrong to start raising hopes.

Gosport to Fareham bus route given green light

Despite heavy campaigning, the Gosport to Fareham rapid bus route will proceed.
The Court of Appeal threw out the appeal against an earlier decision which allowed for the rapid route to be constructed on an abandoned railway line by the Hampshire City Council. Opponents of the new route have argued that the disused rail line has become home to badgers and bats

BA boss waives bonus

British Airways boss, Willie Walsh, has turned down his entitlement to a share award of £334,000 for the third year running. The airline’s chief executive has also agreed to have his pay frozen at £735,000, the same figure it has been at for the last two years.
Because Mr Walsh and other members of the BA board agreed that they would not take any pay for the month of July, Mr Walsh’s pay packet for last year amounted to £674,000. The decision to give up a month’s salary was made because the board wished to stress the fact that the airline [...]

World Cup expectations falter for car rental industry

The FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa has not seen the anticipated upsurge in demand, leaving business prospects uncertain.
The seeming acceptance of the situation followed the drastic reduction in forecasts and bookings of foreign visitors to South Africa for the tournament. Several large clients and sponsors have also declined to attend the championship, citing the slow pace of economic recovery as the reason for reluctance to outlay costs.
