Hertz named as 2010 MotoGP Rental Services Provider

Dorna Sports, the company that holds the rights to the MotoGP, has signed a new agreement with leading car hire operator Hertz.
The new deal will see Hertz sign a one-year contract for the provision of equipment and car rental services for the leading motorcycle racing championship. The MotoGP is one of sport’s premier competitions, with 14 different countries visited across 18 different race tracks on four continents, while the pan-global television coverage ensures huge revenue streams for the event.

Bankruptcy forces Iraqi Airways to close

Iraqi Airways has been forced to cancel all flights as its country’s government announced that the state-owned flag carrier is bankrupt and will have to close down. According to Iraq’s transportation ministry, the situation has been brought about because of a war reparations dispute with neighbouring Kuwait.
Kuwait Airways claims that it is owed $1.2 billion by Iraqi Airways in reparation for aircraft and parts seized by Iraq during its 1990 invasion. Parking fine campaigner loses Sunderland court battle

Parking fine campaigner Neil Herron has lost his High Court battle in opposition to what he said were unlawful penalty charges.
Herron, 47, parked within an area of single yellow lines and received 39 penalty charge notices that he requested to be ruled unenforceable. He disputed that the Sunderland city centre controlled parking area was unlawful due to its large size and the confusion it caused to drivers.

Final Hummer H3 rolls off production line to Avis

Yesterday in Shreveport, the last Hummer H3 rolled off the Louisiana production line as part of an exclusive order for Avis Car Rental Company.
General Motors is cutting down the brand after a drawn out and eventually failed attempt to sell off the classic maker of sport-utility motor vehicles to a Chinese company. A month ago, General Motors hosted a sale of remaining Hummer vehicles and offered discounts of up to $6,000 for certain models.

French investigators call off latest search for Air France A330

Air accident investigators have announced that they are calling off the latest search for an Air France jet which went down in the Atlantic, killing all 228 crew and passengers. Following three-weeks of searching, French officials have ordered a specially equipped Norwegian exploration vessel to return to the Brazilian port of Recife.

British Airways threatens Unite with further legal action

As British Airways cabin crew enter a third day of industrial action, the airline says that it is considering returning to the courts to put an end to the disruption. Last week, BA had an injunction granted to block the strike overturned by the Court of Appeals. The strike by members of the union Unite began on Monday.

Sydney opens Australia’s first electric car charging station

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP opened the first public electric car charging station in Australia yesterday.
The on-street charging spot is located in Derby Place, Glebe. It is managed by ChargePoint and installed by Visionstream. The station uses 100 per cent Origin GreenPower and can recharge converted plug-in hybrids such as a Toyota Prius in three hours.
Ms Moore said that Sydney has joined other cities around the world that have installed electric vehicle charging stations, such as Amsterdam, Houston, San Francisco, London and Vancouver. Marriott announces China expansion plans

Having just posted better quarterly results than expected, Marriott International, owners of the biggest hotel brand in America, has announced that it will be doubling the number of hotels it has in China. The company proposes to do this over the next five years.
By the end of this year, Marriott said that it will increase the number of hotels it currently runs in China from 46 to 60. Within five years it hopes to have opened 90. British Airways strike enters second day

As the strike by British Airways cabin crew enters its second day, thousands of passengers face travel disruption. Although services out of Gatwick and London City Airport were unaffected, BA said that it had managed to fly 50 per cent of its short-haul flights out of Heathrow and 60 per cent of its long-haul operations.
