The second largest car hire company in the United States, Avis Budget, has defended its actions in bidding for the Dollar Thrifty franchise.
Avis, who has been accused of contravening antitrust laws with their counter-offer to the original Hertz bid for Dollar Thrifty, said that it has filed for antitrust approval with US regulators on the potential acquisition.

The Greek tourist industry has suffered a decline in holiday bookings following protests in the capital, Athens. The demonstrations and strikes have been a reaction to austerity measures put in place by the government. According to the hoteliers’ association in Athens, there has been cancellations of 20,000 resort and hotel bookings so far.

A state of emergency is in place in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, as well as 15 provinces throughout the country. A number of foreign embassies in the capital have been closed because of fears that anti-government protests could once again turn violent. The Foreign Office has announced that the British Embassy will be closed all day Friday because it did not want to put anyone in danger of becoming embroiled in the nearby protests.

Hertz, one of the leading car hire companies in the world, has announced the addition of the battery-electric Nissan Leaf vehicle to their fleet. Beginning in early 2011, the Nissan Leaf will join both the major markets of the United States and Europe, shortly after the international release of the highly anticipated electric car.
Hertz spokesperson Paula Rivera confirmed that the group expected the car to be available in US cities within the first few months of next year, but also added that the list of destinations for the new vehicle was still being finalised.
