Additional car hire charges to be levied at O’Hare International

Customers renting vehicles at O’Hare International Airport may soon face additional charges, as airport administrators look for ways in which to cover the costs of major redevelopment plans. Mayor Richard Daley has asked the city aldermen to place an additional charge on rental vehicles of between $6 and $8.

Emirates announces increased profits

Dubai-based Emirates has announced massive profits at a time when most other airlines are struggling. The airline posted year-end profits of $964 million, an increase of over 400 per cent. Emirates claim that it has been able to weather the recession, which has crippled some other airlines, by continuing its strategy of growth.
Emirates has also managed to knock 2.7 per cent off its outgoing costs. The airline has benefitted from a cost cutting strategy, which includes putting a freeze on recruitment and offering staff unpaid leave. Favourable oil prices have also meant that the airline has been able to cut [...]

British Airways pilot loses racism case

A Scottish British Airways pilot has lost a tribunal claim that he was the victim of racism. 54-year-old Douglas Maughan claimed that he became the target of racial victimisation after he published an article in a national newspaper saying that BA had a canteen culture of racism.
Mr Maughan, who has been flying for 29 years, said that he had been called a Jock by colleagues, as well as being told that he should go back to Scotland. He also said that following the article, a pilot trainer who was giving him a flying assessment, deliberately gave him a low score [...]

UK bus and rail under threat from foreign operators claims FirstGroup

The chief executive for FirstGroup, the UK bus and rail operator, has voiced his concerns that the British transport market in under threat.
Sir Moir Lockhead said that state-backed foreign companies were in danger of achieving potential dominance inside Britain. His statement comes in the wake of the recent market movements by France’s SNCF and Germany’s Deutsche Bahn. Although he stopped short of suggesting that either had so far threatened to ruin the operation of UK Rail, the issue was one that authorities in the UK should be monitoring seriously.

Enterprise joins with US students to protect parks and forests

Enterprise Rent-A-Car has joined with Student Conservation Association Teams to protect US parklands.
The new partnership will seek to eradicate invasive species that destroy thousands of acres of public land every year, at an estimated cost of more than $1 billion. The Native Plant Restoration Initiative will see the restoration of some 75,000 acres of public land.
