South West Trains to invest in Greener alternatives

The UK’s largest rail franchise, South West Trains, has announced a £2.2 million investment in greener energy.
In a major overhaul of its regenerative braking system, South West claims that the modifications will both meet the green demands of the modern public while at the same time saving energy.
Over 200 trains that form part of the South West Trains network will be fitted-out with the new technology, meaning that commuters from the London-Waterloo base will be able to experience the eco-friendly option.

British holidaymakers mainly unaffected by Greek protests

According to UK travel organisers Thomson, the current unrest in Greece is having little or no effect on British holidaymakers in the country. A spokeswoman for the travel agent said that, so far, there had been no reports of any problems. She pointed out that most travellers were heading to the resorts, where demonstrations were extremely unlikely.
Protesters have been turning out in their thousands to rally against the Government’s proposed tax increases and austerity cuts. There has also been a 48-hour strike by workers in Athens, which has ended now and appears to have had a minimal effect on holidaymakers.

Sixt leads race to offer electric vehicles

The German-based car hire operator Sixt has begun renting much anticipated electric vehicles this week. The release means that Sixt has gained an all important jump on its rivals in the increasingly competitive car rental market.
Customers choosing to rent with the Sixt group can now take advantage of the electric vehicles in five different German cities thanks to a pilot program that is expected to trail the vehicles for anywhere up to one year.

Expedia launches Travel Agent Affiliate Program in the US

Expedia, the online travel giant, has announced the launch of its Travel Agent Affiliate Program (TAAP) in the US. The program will now allow travel agents across the US to tap into Expedia’s world wide inventory, and at the same time, earn commissions on bookings.
The scheme was first set up in Italy in 2002 and has since expanded into other European territories, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Expedia is currently the only full-service travel provider operating online to offer the service to travel agents.
