British Airways forced to defend its Britishness

Following the proposed merger between British Airways and Spanish carrier, Iberia, the British flag carrier has had to prove to FTSE International, the company which looks after the FTSE 100, that its is still British enough to stay on the company’s listings.
According to FTSE rules, the fact that the new airline is to be incorporated in Spain, will have a listing on the Madrid Stock Exchange and will be called International Airlines, means that the company will actually be classed as Spanish. EU announces proposals to avoid further ash disruption

In a bid to prevent a repeat of the disruption caused to European businesses, passengers and airlines by the volcanic ash cloud which closed the skies over Europe for nearly a week last month, European Union transport ministers have been meeting in Brussels.
A number of measures have been agreed upon, and the European Commission has announced that it will be drawing up guidelines which will allow airlines to receive compensation for loss of earnings from governments.

Avis reveals lower first quarter loss

Leading car rental company Avis Budget Group has announced a narrower 2010 first quarter loss than originally forecast. Aided by increased rental prices and a range of cost-saving initiatives, the New Jersey-based company has said the earnings outlook for the remainder of the year was positive.
Net loss for the group’s first quarter period narrowed to $38 million, the equivalent of $0.37 per share. Profits fell from $49 million, around $0.48 per share, compared to the same period in 2009.

New Avis counter offer for Dollar Thrifty

The Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group has said it would be considering an offer from the Avis Budget Group that was substantially higher than the Hertz bid.
Last week, Hertz announced the takeover bid for Dollar Thrifty that made news worldwide, and was seen as one which would result in the collaborative group becoming the global leader in car rentals.
