Welsh Rail crime drops 8%

For the sixth consecutive year, crime on the British rail network has fallen, and nowhere more so than in Wales. The British Transport Police have declared the decline in the Welsh network as significant for the last 12 months, spearheading the national trend towards greater passenger safety.
The considerable 8.2 per cent decline reflected a greater fall across Britain as the recession has led more people back to rail services, with the increasing number of passengers on rail cars providing an extra security level against mainly petty crime.
The number of robbery cases in the past year was just six, down from [...]

In an attempt to stem the flow of cocaine from Brazil to France, a joint operation between French and Brazilian police has been launched. Every passenger on three flights from Sao Paulo to Paris on Wednesday last week was subjected to a full body frisk, and had their carry on luggage as well as luggage stored in the hold, thoroughly inspected. Two Brazilian TAM flights coming from Paris to Sao Paolo were also searched, according to a French police liaison officer.
The unusual measures were implemented as an experiment to see whether the authorities could disrupt drug smuggling between Brazil and [...]

Avis launches due diligence as Dollar Thrifty battle enters new phase

The counter offer from Avis Budget Group for Dollar Thrifty faces a difficult road ahead say analysts.
With Avis having launched its due diligence, all sides have now fallen silent. However, the recent economic instability means the offer will be harder to finance, and the falling stock price means an Avis share bid could also present difficulties.
Bill Kavaler, analysts with Oscar Gruss, thinks these factors will force Avis into spending more cash than originally intended. However, Dollar Thrifty has already questioned the ability of Avis to counter in cash the Hertz offer of $1 billion. They have also claimed that substantial [...]

IATA boss slams BA strikes

International Air Transport Association chief executive, Giovanni Bisignani, has launched a surprise attack on British Airways’ staff, as a walkout by trade union members enters its fifth day. Bisignani described the current labour dispute as unbelievable at a time when the entire airline industry is struggling to pull itself out of a crippling recession.
The trade body leader said that deciding to strike in the current economic climate showed that Unite members were divorced from reality. He added that airline employees must realise that their paycheques were reliant on the performance of the company that they worked for, and that at [...]

Hertz and Avis claim antitrust approval in Dollar Thrifty bidding war

The contentious and complicated battle for the takeover of Dollar Thrifty has entered a new phase.
Hertz Global Holdings and Avis Budget Group have both raised the stakes in their ongoing bid to wrestle control over the Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, as the issue of antitrust approval forms as the decisive factor.
Any takeover would see significant antitrust issues arise, as the merger of the USA’s fourth biggest car rental company with either of its two larger suitors would lead to unbalanced market dominance according to industry analysts. Hertz, the third-largest US rental company, has tabled an offer worth $1.2 million, while [...]
