The increasingly bloody Thai political crisis that has crippled the country’s tourism industry has been dealt a further blow after some of Bangkok’s best hotels closed their doors.
With the protesting Red Shirt demonstrations setting up camp in the upmarket areas around five-star hotels and shopping complexes in the capital, the worry that fighting may spill over onto their doorstep has forced hotels to evict guests to safer locations, with many refusing bookings till next week at the earliest.

After nearly a week of chronic disruption due to a volcanic eruption in Iceland, it now looks as if the world’s airline industry can start to return to some semblance of normality. Last night, the UK’s airspace was reopened and a British Airways passenger jet inbound from Vancouver was permitted to land at Heathrow. German officials say that they plan to resume flights as of today and planes have already been taking off from Amsterdam, Madrid and Paris.

Cruise ship Celebrity Eclipse has set sail from Southampton to rescue holiday makers who have been stranded in Spain because the volcanic ash cloud hovering over Europe. Because the ash has meant an almost week long closure of much of Europe’s air space, travellers have been desperately seeking alternative modes of transport to get back to Britain.
