Fraser Island handbrake defect inquiry

An inquest in the Australian state of Queensland has heard how a 4WD vehicle that crashed, killing two tourists on the popular backpacker destination of Fraser Island last April, was not roadworthy. A police investigation has ruled that the vehicle was not safe to drive on the notorious sands of the island, although the condition of the 4WD may not be the reason as to why the accident occurred.

British Airways asks for volcano disruption bailout

British Airways is calling upon the UK government and the European Union for financial assistance to help it cope with mounting bills caused by the volcanic ash cloud still hovering over European airspace. The carrier claims that the situation which has grounded its fleet is costing between £15 million and £20 million every day.
British Airways boss, Willie Walsh, said that the events causing the grounding of aircraft across Europe were beyond the airline’s control and that the situation was proving more serious than the disruption caused when US air space was shut down after the September 11th terrorist attacks. Stranded Brits confined to Russian hotel

British travellers, who are stranded in a hotel in Moscow because their flights have been grounded due to the volcanic ash cloud which is currently hovering over European airspace, claim that they are being treated like prisoners because they do not have Russian visas.
Up to 50 passengers are said to be confined to their rooms in the Novotel which is situated next to Sheremetyevo airport. One of those is British student Moira Hickson, who was on her way back from a trip to Thailand with her mother when their plane was grounded in Moscow because of the volcanic ash.
