Rail strike put on hold after court ruling

A four-day nationwide strike that would have crippled the country’s rail network was cancelled on Thursday after being ruled unlawful.
The walkout by signallers, which was earlier scheduled to start on Tuesday, was postponed after Network Rail successfully secured a provisional injunction against the strike. The decision was welcomed and supported in Downing Street, which was concerned that the rail strike was a politically enthused move designed to anger the public just as Prime Minister Gordon Brown calls the election.

Virgin Blue to purchase 105 Boeing jets

Virgin Blue Holdings will purchase at least 105 new Boeing 737 jets over six years to replace its old planes and to offer new flight routes. The new planes are to be delivered starting June 2011 up to 2017.
The deal is Virgin Blue’s largest plane order in its 10-year history. The Brisbane-based airline company said in a press release on Thursday that a significant percentage of the new jets are intended for replacement of Virgin Blue’s existing narrow-body fleet. Meanwhile, the remaining planes will be used to boost flight frequency and for new routes.

Irish Tourism Minister Mary Hanafin advocates second hand vehicles for car hire

Mary Hanafin, the Irish Minister for Tourism, has suggested the car rental industry in Ireland should employ a range of quality used motor vehicles in order to cover the anticipated shortfall in hire cars this summer season.
Speaking at the Irish Parliaments question time session, Ms Hanafin pointed out that whereas in the past the car rental industry had always prided itself on being able to offer the latest new release models, the economic downturn had resulted in a new approach being necessary to satisfy both demand and cost requirements.

Rail and Road delays across the UK this Easter Weekend

The miserable weather that has lashed the UK this week looks set to carry over to the Easter long weekend, disrupting the travel plans of hundreds of holidaymakers. Already in the past few days, snowstorms have created havoc with the country’s transport systems, with numerous delays on the country’s rail lines and widespread road repairs.
