Severe disruptions to both road and rail services are set to throw this Bank Holiday weekend travel plans into chaos.
Millions of UK travellers are facing delays after a spate of recent roadworks were announced, along with five of the seven main railway lines throughout the country being cut by engineers for servicing. To compound the misery for those looking to get away for the weekend, the weather forecast is gloomy, with temperatures expected to fall to around 10 degrees Celsius. Frost warnings have even been issued to green thumbs planning on spending time in their gardens.
The train delays are by far [...]

The European Union has announced that it will be bringing to an end the restrictions which are currently in place to prevent airline passengers carrying liquids onto aircraft. Currently, passengers are only allowed to take liquids on board if they are in containers measuring no more than 100ml, and if the containers are visible in a clear plastic bag measuring no more than 20cm by 20cm.
The restrictions are due to come to an end by April 2013. The ban on liquids came into force in 2006 after British police uncovered a terrorist plot to smuggle liquid explosives onto transatlantic flights. [...]

China has announced that it is lifting the ban on anyone with HIV or Aids entering the country. The change in quarantine laws comes just days before the Shanghai World Expo is launched, an event the Chinese hope will attract around four million visitors from abroad.
Officially, the State Council said that the lifting of the ban was due to evidence that border control did very little to stop the spread of HIV. It also said that there is also a greater understanding of the disease in China now. The ban had lasted for 20 years. The cabinet also pointed out that enforcing [...]

The Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc has announced a quarterly profit that has been hugely beyond estimates.
The excellent profits, coupled with the recent takeover announcement of the company by Hertz, has combined to lead Dollar Thrifty to reaffirm its positive outlook for the remainder of the year, a factor further strengthened by lower fleet costs and increasing demand.
Shares in Dollar Thrifty, which only this week agreed to the Hertz acquisition, hit a two-year high, reaching $43.60 per share – an increase of three per cent from the previous quarter. The result has led the group to forecast continued growth in the [...]

For the second time in just four months, the M60 around Manchester is to be dug up for repairs and maintenance, meaning further delays for motorists.
The six-mile length of the road, laid a decade ago, is to be resurfaced at the area around the Middleton junction 19 to junction 23 at Ashton-under-Lyne. In December last year, following the opening of a number of cracks in the road’s surface, the same stretch or road was placed under investigation by the Highways Agency. The new project is set to start on May 7 and is expected to continue until the end of [...]

In 2009, the big travel trend was the ‘staycation’, as the effects of the recession forced many people into stay-at-home vacations. Now, according to Avis Europe, 2010 will be the year of the so-called ‘experience holiday’. The reason for the declaration is a recent survey undertaken by the hire car company.
The study polled British travellers about their holiday plans for 2010, and discovered that over a third of all holidaymakers intended on taking a trip which was based around at least one activity, seemingly in a bid to make up for lost opportunities in 2009. Nearly 20 per cent of [...]

Lufthansa is preparing to unveil its new first and business class cabins. The unveiling will take place next month, and Michael Oakey, an aircraft interior design expert, says that the carrier has gone for a contemporary design rather than something more flashy and futuristic. He said that the cabin interiors will bring to mind luxury cars and private jets.
Lufthansa is following the lead of both Air France and British Airways, who have decided that rather than cut back on their offerings to premium class passengers in the wake of the global economic meltdown, they will innovate. In February, British Airways [...]
