Coupons provide great travel savings

Coupon programs are no longer the exclusive domain of supermarkets. In the modern market they can be used for obtaining discounts on everything from car hire, plane tickets, hotels, travel packages and much more.
Sites such as discountvouchers.co.uk and RetailMeNot.com are two of the better known coupon specialists, with both featuring an excellent range of travel-related discounts. For example, a recent check revealed that savings of up to 50 per cent could be had with Enterprise Rent A Car and Orbitz travel packages, while US rail travellers can easily find up to 20 per cent off Amtrak tickets.

Peru to fine Orient Express $10 million

Peru might enforce a penalty of up to $10 million against partners of Orient Express Hotels which manages the Machu Picchu tourist train.
Members of the anti-trust regulator. Indecopi, suggested that the companies involved should be penalised for abusive practices against likely competitors on the route. The Indecopi board is currently evaluating the possible penalty to be charged.
Sources inside Indecopi revealed that the companies have until the end of the month to give their response to the findings made by the regulator. From there, the panel will release its final ruling within a month.

Wave of airline strikes hits Europe

Holidaymakers across Europe should expect more chaos, as the strike held by British Airways (BA) staff continues and labour conflicts in other carriers. BA cabin crew had ended their strike at midnight on Monday, but plan to start the strike again this Saturday.
The UK national carrier announced that during the first two days of the strike, BA had operated only 78 per cent of its scheduled international flights and half of its short-haul flights.

UK job centre staff spending millions on first-class train travel

Statistics revealed by Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) Minister Jonathan Shaw to the House of Commons have shown that staff at job centres across the United Kingdom have spent in excess of £3.1 million on premium rail travel in the past year.
The JobCentre Plus figures outlining the level of spending were announced in written form by way of response to the parliamentary question posed by Philip Hammond, the Conservative MP for Runnymede and Weybridge. Rental car firms Thrity and Dollar enter US prepaid toll market

The US company Rent A Toll has announced the launch of a new agreement between Pass24 Prepaid Tolls in Oakland and San Francisco with Thrifty Car Rental and Dollar Rent-A-Car.
The Pass24 scheme will be extended to customers from both of the hire car companies, being already in place in Florida, Colorado and Texas. The system will allow rental drivers to bypass cash lanes on the bridges in the San Francisco area, utilising the express toll lanes. This effectively means doing without the hassle of fumbling for change or waiting in line.

Emirates Team New Zealand won LVT in Auckland

Competing for the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Emirates Team New Zealand won the most coveted Louis Vuitton Trophy (LVT) on 21 March in Auckland. The team defeated the Mascalzone Latino Audi Team, which earlier in February represented Club Nautico di Roma at the Challenger of Record for the 34th America’s Cup. The water racing competition, which lasted for two weeks, was sailed using 82-foot-long America’s Cup yachts with 17 crew members.

Ticket demand for 2012 Olympic Games goes up

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) recently revealed that the number of tickets available on its online portal has swelled from 300,000 to over eight million. The rise in tickets also includes the Paralympics, which has gone up from 500,000 to two million. The increase was due to the shortening of some sporting events, such as beach volleyball, which are still awaiting approval from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Thrifty Car Hire Australia partnership under investigation

Australian motoring body the National Roads & Motorists’ Association (NRMA), which made an ill-advised venture into the car rental market in association with hire organisation, is to be investigated by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission following complaints of an internal cover-up.
Last month, former NRMA director Richard Talbot wrote in a letter to Tony D’Aloisio, the ASIC chairman, that information relating to the unexpected departure of the former Thrifty head John Walker in 2008 was not disclosed to board members.

Easter rail strike looms as talks continue

Last-ditch talks aimed at preventing an Easter rail strike which threatens to disrupt the travel plans of hundreds of thousands on Britons will be held today. Maintenance workers and signal staff have voted to walk-off the job over changes to workplace practices and job losses.
