IATA reports second safest year

The International Air Transport Association, the governing body for the global aviation industry, has declared 2009 the second safest year ever on record following the release of new statistics.
In 2009, the worldwide accident rate equated to one mishap per 1.4 million flights. The accident rate uses hull losses for western manufactured aircraft in terms of per million ratios, resulting in an overall rating of 0.71. This represents a major improvement from the accident rate recorded in 2008 which scored a far higher 0.81.

British Airways crew vote in favour of strike

Passengers with upcoming flights booked with British Airways could face travel chaos as cabin crew voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action due to work conditions and pay.

Iran expels Greek flight attendant over naming row for Persian Gulf

A Greek flight attendant who worked at an Iranian domestic airline has been expelled following a disagreement with a number of in-flight passengers as to the proper name for the Persian Gulf.
An employee with local Kish Airlines, the attendant reportedly engaged in a heated verbal debate during a flight from Tehran to Kish last Friday. The attendant is also alleged to have threatened the passengers with arrest according to local police authorities.
The row stemmed from the airline’s in-flight monitor screen display showing that the Gulf waterway in question was named the Arabian Gulf. Passengers brought the matter to the attention [...]

Hertz UAE wins leading mystery shopper award

Hertz, the world’s largest car rental company and premier hire organization inside the United Arab Emirates, has been ranked the region’s leader under a new survey using mystery shopper. The survey was undertaken by Dubai-based Arabian Travel News and Ethos Consultancy, a leading travel publication for the travel industry.
The leading rental group in the UAE, won points for its keenly maintained depot appearance, ease of access to location, tidiness and cleanliness including how well employees are presented and groomed. Lufthansa strike threatens chaos across Europe

The already troubled European airline industry is facing yet more disruptions after pilots working for German carrier Lufthansa voted in favour of their largest strike in almost a decade in reaction to ongoing job security.
Of the airline’s pilots, a staggering 93 percent said yes to the strike, which is scheduled to begin on Monday. All of the pilots will be asked to participate in the strike which will have massive consequences given Lufthansa is one of the ‘big three’ airlines in Europe along with British Airways and France-KLM.

EasyJet Begins Route to Isle of Man from Liverpool

Britains biggest polluting motorist named as Jenson Button

Formula 1 World Champ and celebrity sportsman Jenson Button has been declared the largest polluting celebrity motorist.
Theoretically the planet’s top driver does little to promoted eco-friendly motoring given that the F1 industry is a multi-billion dollar gasoline waster, but Button has made headlines after City Car Club declared that the champ has a fleet of vehicles for getting around which average 383.1g/km of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. This number is roughly triple that of a standard hatchback car.

Renewed Indian travel warnings for Australia, US and UK

The terrorist attack at the popular Indian tourist destination of Pune last weekend has seen Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States renew their travel warnings for travel to the country.

Hertz announces Irish expansion

The Irish county of Fingal is set to receive a much needed employment boost after car hire giant Hertz announced plans to create up to 100 new jobs at the Swords Business Park outside of Dublin.
Seeking to expand its European services, Hertz, the world’s largest rental car organisation, will upgrade Dublin operations at the Swords based rental centre.
