About 3,500 British Airways (BA) workers, including 1,000 pilots, are ready to work as plane stewards to help ease the potentially disastrous effects of a planned strike by cabin crew. With so many pro-management staff prepared to intervene, it is expected that the UK’s national carrier will still be able to operate limited flight service even if 12,000 of its cabin crew will join the walk out.

An EU diplomat said that Israel’s alleged role in the killing of a Hamas member in Dubai on 19 January and the assassins’ suspected use of fake EU passports are believed to damage Israel’s ties with the EU.
Dubai police said that at least 11 suspects in Mahmoud al-Mabhouh’s killing used altered German, French, Irish and British passports. Police Chief Dahi Khalfan Tamim added that the killers were already staying in Dubai for almost a year before the murder.

Leading UK air operator British Airways has won its latest High Court case against the unions after the court ruled that staff contract conditions had not been breached following changes to onboard conditions for employees.
Unite, the union representing the airline staff, has been in constant negotiations with BA over recent months, many of which have become acrimonious to say the least. The International Air Transport Association, the governing body for the global aviation industry, has declared 2009 the second safest year ever on record following the release of new statistics.
In 2009, the worldwide accident rate equated to one mishap per 1.4 million flights. The accident rate uses hull losses for western manufactured aircraft in terms of per million ratios, resulting in an overall rating of 0.71. This represents a major improvement from the accident rate recorded in 2008 which scored a far higher 0.81.
