Turkish road changes warnings for holiday drivers

Holidaymakers heading toward Turkey for their vacation had best take heed of the latest changes to road rules, which will come into effect as of May 1st.
The main issue concerns the use of people carriers of the 9-seater variety. These minibuses have long been the preferred choice of larger families of sports teams for travel but new legislation in Turkey has declared that such vehicles be classified as a heavy vehicle rather than a car. This means that a specified heavy vehicle license will be required before you can get behind the wheel.
Those people who are contemplating hiring such a [...]

All Nippon Airlines unveils female only toilet

The Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways has unveiled another questionable toilet etiquette policy following the announcement of new, female-only lavatories to be installed on its jet planes. Only recently, the same airline raised eyebrows in the travel industry by instructing its boarding passengers to visit the bathroom before stepping onto the plane – theoretically as a water and environment saving measure.
The women-only lavatory will be introduced by ANA next month on all international flights. The reason, claims the airline, is that women air passengers have said that a separate toilet was the thing they wished for the most on long [...]

Car rental expert urges early Easter bookings

The leading British-based car rental comparison site, Carrentals.co.uk has cautioned Easter holidaymakers that reservations are essential this year lest would-be drivers find themselves at the receiving end of surging hire demand as witnessed in the last few weeks of summer.
The well-known website warned that attractive money-saving deals and model availability may be limited in their offerings following initial reservations throughout the industry pointing to an unusually high demand for vehicles. This Easter appears to have become the default holiday period for many who ‘stay-cationed’ over the festive season in a bid to overcome the inflated prices of the recession-hit tourism [...]

US Supreme Court rules in favour of Hertz car hire

The world’s largest car rental brand, The Hertz Corporation, has won a favourable ruling from the US Supreme Court in the hotly debated case of Hertz vs. Friend. The case revolved around a lawsuit which brought into question how the principal place of business for a national corporation could be defined by the court.
The hire car giant has argued that the headquarters of a corporation are its epicentre and therefore should be classified as the primary place of business. This position was upheld by the Supreme Court who implemented what they termed a nerve centre test. Such a test sees [...]

3,500 BA staff ready to counter work strike

About 3,500 British Airways (BA) workers, including 1,000 pilots, are ready to work as plane stewards to help ease the potentially disastrous effects of a planned strike by cabin crew. With so many pro-management staff prepared to intervene, it is expected that the UK’s national carrier will still be able to operate limited flight service even if 12,000 of its cabin crew will join the walk out.

BA staffs are striking over their jobs, pay and work conditions. Last week, the High Court ruled that the airline had not violated any contract by reducing the number of cabin staff on several [...]

Al-Mabhouh killing hurts Israeli ties with UAE and EU

An EU diplomat said that Israel’s alleged role in the killing of a Hamas member in Dubai on 19 January and the assassins’ suspected use of fake EU passports are believed to damage Israel’s ties with the EU.

Dubai police said that at least 11 suspects in Mahmoud al-Mabhouh’s killing used altered German, French, Irish and British passports. Police Chief Dahi Khalfan Tamim added that the killers were already staying in Dubai for almost a year before the murder.

High Court rules in favour of BA in contract row

Leading UK air operator British Airways has won its latest High Court case against the unions after the court ruled that staff contract conditions had not been breached following changes to onboard conditions for employees.
Unite, the union representing the airline staff, has been in constant negotiations with BA over recent months, many of which have become acrimonious to say the least. The latest case stemmed from changes made to staff contracts in an effort by the embattled airline to reduce overheads in the face of ongoing economic instability. BA has defended the move aimed squarely at halting falling profit while [...]
