UK ferry travel numbers on the rise

The Passenger Shipping Association has released figures that indicate a marked rise in UK ferry passenger numbers as over 11.4 million trips were made across the UK last year. The increase, of around 1.4 percent against 2008 statistics, re-enforced the belief across the travel industry that staycationing was the biggest trend of 2009.

British Airways Only Able to Get 216 Volunteers

It now seems, according to the Unite union, that only 216 volunteers have offered to replace British Airways’ cabin crew in the event of industrial action. The trade union went on to claim that the program to retrain employees to replace the stewards during industrial action would replace less than 2 percent of the carrier’s cabin crew.

Aldi Travel Closed to New Bookings

It now seems that yet another holiday company is closing its doors to new bookings. The UK firm Aldi Travel, which is a subsidiary of the German supermarket group, said that it had carried out the move to enable it to review the deals that it is offering.
Aldi Travel did go on to say that customers that have already booked holidays through the company would not be affected by this new course of action. Ethiopian Airlines Apparently Ignored Warnings from Flight Control

New reports show that the Ethiopian Airlines jet that just recently crashed off the coast of Lebanon ignored instructions from the air traffic controller to avoid a series of violent thunderstorms. Elias Murr, the Lebanese Defense Minister, said that a traffic control recording shows that the tower told the pilot to turn to avoid the storm. However, the plane went in the opposite direction. It is not yet known what happened or whether it was beyond the pilot’s control or not.

Qatar Airways Offering Passengers Free Upgrades

It now appears that Qatar Airways is offering business class passengers a chance to upgrade to first class for free on some of its services to the Middle East. This offer, which is the latest attempt by the carrier to boost its market shares, is valid on services from Heathrow to Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Dubai, Kuwait and Muscat via its hub in Doha.

Highland Airways No Longer Taking Bookings

Reports show that Highland Airways has now stopped taking bookings for future flights. This is being blamed on the severe winter weather, which is causing financial difficulties. Due to the large amounts of snow that fell all over the UK, many airlines were unable to fly their routes.
Highland Airways went on to say that it was facing difficult trading, mostly recently exacerbated by the severe winter weather and resultant reduced flying and income. Ethiopian Airlines Jet Crashes into the Mediterranean Killing 90

New reports have come in that show that all ninety passengers that were on board the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737-800 jet that crashed into the Mediterranean are believed to have died. The jet, which was bound for Addis Ababa, crashed into the sea just shortly after taking off from Beirut airport. Some witnesses said that they saw a ball of fire.

The Welsh Assembly has made new calls for improving the region’s much maligned rail network, with the enterprise and learning committee making a total of 21 recommendations in a report for network upgrades. According to the committee Wales is not receiving an appropriate investment share necessary to improve services and is unable to cope with the demands of the rail travelling public.
