Global Tourism Is Expected to Rebound in 2010

It seems that global tourism is now expected to rebound strongly in 2010. This rebound would follow just after a very difficult year, which was caused by the swine flu outbreak and the credit crisis. According to the UN World Tourism Organization, growth for the industry is expected to be about 3 to 4 percent. This would follow a less than expected 4 percent fall to 880 million international arrivals seen in 2009. The less than predicted fall was caused by a surprising growth in the fourth quarter from Asia, Pacific and Middle East regions.

New British Airways Strike Threat Moves Closer

Just when people thought that British Airways was going to be able to work it out with the Unite union, announcements came back that show the talks have now broke down once again. Thus, British Airways’ cabin crew will vote again on the possibility of taking strike action against the company.

Eurostar to Pay Big Money in Holiday Breakdown Compensation

It now seems that Eurostar is expected to shell out some big money to 100,000 passengers who had problems with their Christmas travel plans due to breakdowns with the high speed cross Channel service. Right now reports suggest that Eurostar could be paying as much as £10 million to cover compensation.

Air France rail plans grounded by government

Air France’s bid to roll out a new range of high-speed trains has been shelved for the time being following newly introduced government legislation which many believe is a deliberate ploy to restrict the freedom of operation of the airline.
In July 2008, the plans for a high-speed rail network were revealed but Air France acknowledged at the time that due to the lack of visibility over French rail deregulation rules that the dossier was not considered urgent.

Scotland cracks down on rail crossing deaths

Yesterday saw Scotland launch a massive nationwide crackdown which hopes to address the ongoing issue of fatalities and injuries on the country’s level crossing network.
The new scheme comes just months after a horrific crash claimed the lives of an elderly couple last September. In that incident, Margaret and Angus MacKay, both aged 81, were killed along with Mr MacKay’s 66-year-old brother at an unmanned crossing which has no barriers but a small set of warning lights.
