US airlines claim most passengers now home

The majority of passengers who found themselves stuck at airports in the US as blizzards swept up the east coast have made it to their required destinations, according to the airlines. Spokesman for Chicago-based United, Rahsaan Johnson, confirmed that the carrier had now managed to get most passengers home or at least on their way home. The airline has added an extra Boeing 747 between New York and Los Angeles.

Tax increase in south-east airports is to ease overcrowding

The government has considered the possibility of bringing in higher airport taxes in the hope that it will ease congestion by deterring passengers from flying in the South-East.
The hope is that passengers will then choose regional airports instead of the overcrowded South-East airports.
Theresa Villiers, the Aviation Minister said that Air Passenger Duty would need to be reformed next year which could lead to a variety of rates among different airports and reduce overcrowding.
She also said that the reforms would help regional airports to do better and in turn relieve the congestion in busy airports in the South-East.

Travel price hikes for London commuters

Commuters returning to work in 2011 are unlikely to feel very seasonal as they are faced with a massive increase in fare prices according to London TravelWatch. The watchdog warned that the average price of fares on the travel network was set to increase by 6.8 per cent as of 2 January.

Forecasters have warned of coldest winter in 300 years

Temperatures over the winter season haven’t exactly been forgiving. With lows of -0.8C (32F) – which is colder than it has been in any year since 1683/84 – it’s no wonder that millions of lives have been affected and Christmas shopping has seen a poor turn-out, further damaging the economy.

Sales of American Air tickets increase despite disputes

This Wednesday, American Airlines parent company AMR said that ticket sales had fared well after a dispute between them and two of the largest online travel agencies in the US though critics are saying that the extra incentives could have softened the blow.

Air passenger punches boy using iPhone

An elderly airline passenger has been arrested by the police after he punched a teenager in the arm for refusing to turn off his iPhone. The 68-year-old became irritated with the boy because he refused to comply with the usual instructions that all passengers are required to turn off electronic items including cell phones during take-off and landing.

Cathay Pacific passengers stranded at JFK for 11 hours

Cathay Pacific has announced that it will be investigating why passengers, who had already been on planes for 16 hours after flying to New York from Hong Kong, had to wait a further 11 hours at the airport before they were allowed to disembark. The airline has already issued an apology to the 1,100 customers who were affected.

Poor mental health is linked to joblessness

According to a survey conducted in Wales, the number of unemployed people with mental health problems is increasing rapidly.
Many youngsters are suffering from depression, insomnia and panic attacks according to the survey by the Princes Trust.
Young people in Wales have been badly affected by the recession with a lack of direction and drive being at the heart of their depression.

Pay will stay at same level throughout 2011

As 2011 waits just around the corner, research is showing that many businesses will freeze pay in the new year while many more will implement wage cuts. Of the 345 companies that were included in the survey, only two in five said that they will give their staff, bonuses.
