Global Ministerial Road Safety Summit opens in Moscow

World representatives are uniting this week in the Russian capital of Moscow in an effort to minimise the number of global road deaths. It is hoped that actions taken by united world governments, taking place on Thursday, could mean up to 5 million lives are saved on the world’s roads.
The inaugural Global Ministerial Summit on Road Safety will urge delegates to agree on plans aimed at a decade of action, with the stated goal being a 50 percent reduction in road deaths by the year 2020.

Liberal Democrat Says Air Passenger Duty Does Not Add Up

It now seems that Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has come forward and gave her two cents about the government’s decision to increase the Air Passenger Duty tax. She noted that this will have a negative impact on the Caribbean economy and will do very little for the environment as well. Overall, she pointed out that the tax as a whole just does not add up.

European Businesses Cut Travel Budget

It now seems that American Express has just recently reported that they have seen two thirds of European businesses cut their travel budget in 2009. These reports go on to suggest that the average spending on travel had dropped as much as 18 percent per business.
TMC’s European Business Travel Barometer for 2009 went on to show that 366 companies that were quizzed had cut their travel budget by an average of 18 percent. Scotland and North West England Face Travel Chaos Due to Flood

Just recently, the travel conditions in Scotland and north west England have taken a turn for the worst thanks to major floods, which have been causing many travel problems. Due to these floods, many trains are not running and buses, which would be replacing many of the train cancellations are unable to operate in many areas.

Fresh calls have come from health and travel experts for the need for travel insurance for those UK holidaymakers planning on visiting the Channel Islands following the end of a mutual agreement between the Islands and Britain.

This year marked the 30th anniversary of the World Travel Market (WTM) held in London, with car hire operator Decode making a significant impact on new and existing partners alike.
Of particular interest to conference attendees was Decode’s commitment to strengthen its customer service department, a move that was widely welcomed. Air France Says it Needs to Cut 1700 More Jobs

In light of having a worse than expected quarterly loss, the well known carrier Air France has unveiled its latest plans to cut another 1,700 jobs next year. The carrier says that these cuts are having to be made in light of the fuel hedging losses and poor cargo traffic that has been seen because of the recession. Overall, the airline will have cut 3,000 jobs in the year to March 31, 2010.

Lufthansa Announces Plans to Reduce Seat Pitch

Lufthansa’s deputy and CEO, Christoph Franz, has just recently revealed that Lufthansa will overhaul its European economy class product next year in a bid to cut costs. The main development is that passengers will see their seat pitch reduced. This will be done so that the German national carrier can put more passengers on every flight, thus being able to reduce ticket prices.

Aer Lingus Says it Needs More Volunteer Redundancies

The carrier Aer Lingus has now admitted that it needs more voluntary redundancies. They went on to say that if they do not get the redundancies that they need, then more cuts will have to be made but by force. The Irish carrier, which is currently in talks with unions, said that it has been able to save €97 million under its Transformation Plan. This does include €74 million on staff costs and €23 million in other areas.
